Abstract
Il contributo ricostruisce, attraverso le fonti archivistiche e a stampa coeve, il tentativo di incrocio tra razza bovina Durham e razza Chianina realizzato in Val di Chiana nel 1856-58, per volere del governo granducale, in contrasto con l’indirizzo zootecnico seguito dagli allevatori autoctoni. Ne esplora le motivazioni storiche, le fasi e le vicende specifiche di sua realizzazione, gli esiti, i ruoli degli attori a vario titolo coinvolti, e raccoglie la testimonianza del medico veterinario che seguì l’intera sperimentazione, oggetto, vent’anni più tardi (1875), di un’accesa discussione a un Congresso nazionale di veterinaria. 

The contribution describes the controversial attempt to crossbreed two cattle breeds, Durham x Chianina, in Val di Chiana, at the behest of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany between 1856 and 1858. Through the examination of authentic documents of that period and the important testimony of the veterinarian that led the trial, it was possible to reconstruct the reasons behind the crossbreeding trial, which actors were involved and their roles, the different phases, events, and conclusions of it.
