Riassunto

Il territorio dell’Albufera valenciana rappresenta un caso eccezionale per esaminare le millenarie stratificazioni storiche di una delle principali aree umide delle coste mediterranee, fino alle grandi trasformazioni avvenute a partire dagli anni Cinquanta del XX secolo, che hanno completamente mutato il paesaggio e non sono estranee alle recenti inondazioni (ottobre 2024) che hanno colpito la regione di Valencia. L’articolo intende ricostruire la millenaria storia di questo territorio, ovvero la formazione geologica dell’Albufera, le forme di insediamento e sfruttamento delle risorse dall’epoca romana e musulmana fino ai secoli del basso Medioevo e dell’età moderna. La storia dei paesaggi è una storia di continue trasformazioni, che fino ad epoca recente sono state in grado di mantenere livelli di sostenibilità tra crescita economica e protezione dell’ambiente, che includono anche aspetti sociali e culturali. Ripercorrere la storia può fornire elementi di valutazione di fronte alle calamità attuali e anche alle incertezze del futuro.

Abstract

Sustainability and Exploitation in the Albufera of Valencia in Ancient and Medieval Times. The territory of the Albufera of Valencia represents an exceptional case for examining the millennia-old historical stratifications of one of the main wetlands along the Mediterranean coast, up until the major transformations that began in the 1950s, which completely altered the landscape and are not unrelated to the recent floods (October 2024) that affected the Valencia region. This article aims to reconstruct the millennia-long history of this territory, including the geological formation of the Albufera, settlement patterns, and resource exploitation from the Roman and Muslim periods through the late Middle Ages and the early modern era. The history of landscapes is one of continuous transformations, which, until recent times, managed to maintain a sustainable balance between economic growth and environmental protection, also incorporating social and cultural aspects. Retracing this history can provide insights for assessing current disasters as well as the uncertainties of the future.
